Giant Trees of the Tumucumaque Mountains National Park

Cliente: Universidade de Exeter

Our team embarked on an expedition to Amapá, in search of the incredible giant trees of the Tumucumaque Mountains National Park that can reach 60 to 80 meters in height.

With more than 3 million hectares, this park is one of the largest reserves in Brazil and a true treasure of the Amazon region. It is a sanctuary of biodiversity, home to unique species, lush vegetation and, according to researchers, home to the highest Amazon.

Geonoma in this project aimed to allocate 5 hectares of permanent plots for the study by the University of Exeter and partners who will monitor and understand more about these large specimens, such as angelins.

In a field month, we installed plots, collected and pressed branches of tree specimens for later incorporation into herbariums. In addition to our technical team, we have the support of experienced climbers to collect these large individuals, totaling a team of 15 people.

2381 individuals (not only giants) were registered and this information will be very valuable for the study of the vegetation of the region.
