Nature-Based Solutions Manifest

BIODIVERSITY, CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION FROM GEONOMA’S VIEW

The market for environmental services and nature-based solutions has never received as much attention and importance as it has in the past three years. The urgency of the climate crisis has motivated society, companies and nations to incorporate socio-environmental externalities into their economic balance sheets (what we call ESG principles) and treat what was previously considered an expense as an investment. Here is where the carbon credit market plays a prominent role as a great business opportunity. Carbon simultaneously generates income for those who preserve it and allows a gradual and sustainable transition to an economy of low greenhouse gas emissions..

The technical and multidisciplinary knowledge for the elaboration of environmental diagnoses, biodiversity surveys, conservation and protection of natural areas is a needed solid base for the construction of viable and high-quality carbon projects. Geonoma, a company with extensive experience in environmental studies, emerges in this new scenario as a protagonist, contributing to the solution of problems related to climate change.

We have been in the market for 13 years, always seeking to bring the best knowledge about biodiversity, restoration and conservation to our work. Over 450 projects have been executed in all biomes, in situations that required complex and creative solutions. We are, therefore, a company with deep field experience and a solid understanding of how natural areas can and should be protected, managed and restored.

As a natural development of our business, Geonoma is now a developer of carbon credit projects. And, more than that, a developer specialized in biodiversity, which operates in all stages of the environmental market, in an approach that we call 360º strategy.

From our experience, we declare nine basic rules for the development of meaningful and quality projects, which we faithfully follow:

1 - We reinforce that Brazil is not solely formed by forest vegetation, but by a variety of ecosystems. We value the diversity, peculiarities and contributions of each ecosystem to an ecologically balanced environment;

2 - We recognize the value of the existence of all species and defend the adequate valuation of biodiversity, as it provides essential ecosystem services for life on Earth;

3 - We understand that the protection of a natural area is not limited to prohibiting people from accessing it, but also creating mechanisms to make it an asset for society, generating engagement on the importance and benefits of its conservation;

4 - We believe that social projects should, above all, empower communities, recognizing local and traditional knowledge as ways to promote a harmonious relationship with nature;

5 - We know that restoring is not just planting seedlings, but restoring ecological processes;

6 - We prioritize the use of native species and use exotic species with great caution;

7 - We defend that carbon credit generation projects must have clear additionality in order to promote environmental integrity;

8 - We believe that payment projects for environmental services should offer clear benefits in the protection of natural areas;

9 - For us, a high-quality conservation carbon project (REDD+) must necessarily be associated with the generation of socio-environmental benefits.

Remembering and following these rules is the duty of everyone who seeks to offer Nature-Based Solutions. In this manifesto, Geonoma reaffirms its commitment to attract investments to where Brazil has its greatest potential: biodiversity.

Environmental Monitoring and the invasive marmosets

We can say that environmental monitoring is basically a series of inventories of flora or fauna, carried out with the aim of knowing the biodiversity.

EIA/EIR: What is it and what is it for?

The EIA/EIRis an acronym for Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Impact Report, respectively.   Both are documents aimed at sustainability, aiming to assess and specify the intensity and dimension of the impact on the environment. These two documents are different, but have the same degree of importance, and are fundamental in the environmental licensing process.   The […]

Environmental Licensing for Real Estate Developments

There is a lot of bureaucracy in Brazil for any type of entrepreneurship, so it would not be different for environmental licensing for real estate developments.
