This project carried out by Geonoma aimed to prepare a detailed diagnosis of the environmental situation of the Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPN) and other private green areas located within the geographical scope of the "Atlantic Forest Program" by WWF-Brazil.
The Program covers areas with vegetation characteristic of the Dense Ombrophylous Forest in the surroundings of Serra do Mar, Mixed Ombrophylous Forest (Floresta Ombrófia Mista) as a part of Serra da Mantiqueira and Seasonal Semideciduous Forest in the Alto Paraná region.
From secondary data, cadastral databases and spatial analyzes were created containing all existing reserves in the study area, covering three different countries: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
There was also the application of a questionnaire aimed at owners and managers of the reserves with the purpose of identifying opportunities, challenges and gaps in the management of private protected areas in the region, as well as understanding the local problems and the reality in which they are inserted.
In all, information on 422 private reserves were catalogued, 367 of which are in Brazil, 38 in Argentina and 17 in Paraguay, totaling 261,549.64 hectares of protected areas in the WWF-Brazil Program.
Geonoma also verified that 40% of the evaluated Reserves currently develop some type of economic activity, with tourism being the main alternative chosen by managers and owners to generate income.
This tourism has the potential to be economically exploited in a clean and sustainable way, encouraging the protection of the environment while reverting resources to conservation.
Thus, based on the results of the project, WWF-Brasil obtained a rich database that is extremely responsive to the difficulties in managing private reserves that are within the scope of the Atlantic Forest Program, enabling the taking of actions and the development of better strategies to promote Biodiversity conservation.
